A Pair Of 'Chinese Chippendale' Design Black Lacquer And Gilt Cockpen Armchairs - c.1910
An extraordinary pair of black lacquer and gilt armchairs, the pierced trellis backs and matching arm rests with central panels decorated Oriental figures, flowers and other motifs, with cane seats, on blind fret carved legs with fretted corner brackets, united by an H stretcher.
The arm supports, top rail, side rails and edges of the seats are also decorated in gilt with pheasants, figures, stylised flowers and tendrils.
These chairs are an early 20th century interpretation of Thomas Chippendale’s 18th century ‘Chinese Design’ chairs, usually referred to as cockpen chairs.
English, c.1910.
Condition:
In excellent original condition, with very light surface wear commensurate with occasional use. The cane seats appear to be original and are in good condition. Ready to go.
